I'm sure the majority of you have watched Disney Channel before, and I know that whenever the TV's on during the day at my house, Disney Channel is what's being watched. I was reading an article about Disney's Good Luck Charlie, and how it is going to be showing an episode featuring a lesbian couple--Disney's first show to do so. And in the comments section below were some of the most vulgar, terrible, bigoted, homophobic comments I've ever had the displeasure of reading.

Article Comment: "Not right. Disney was always a wholesome family channel..... 'traditional families' (male / females couples capable of procreating). I agree with most others; if this is going to be the new norm at Disney Channel I will just stop watching all together. Disney was one of the last places a true American (Christian - seeing as how this country was founded on Christianity) could watch 'normal life' on TV."

Okay, FIRST OFF, traditional families are now male/female couples capable of having children? What about women who physically can not bear a child? Does that make them untraditional as well? And a "true American"? Really?! America was discovered by people trying to escape persecution: by people looking for a better life. A true American isn't defined as a die-hard homosexual-hating change-fearing Christian! There have been gay people as long as there have been straight people; the only reason it's becoming more of a visible normality is because gays are no longer being killed for their sexuality, unless you're talking about third-world nations, like Uganda, where the punishment for "acts of homosexuality" included the death penalty, until recently changed to life in prison (www.cnn.com/2013/12/21/world/a…). Being LGBTQ is NOT anything new!

Comment: "Well said Brian, Unfortunately, the other side thinks that gay people are normal, but they never will be. being gay has been & always will be a CHOICE."

Yeah, because we'd totally CHOSE to be the minority! Did you know that up to 40% of America's homeless youth is LGBTQ? Does anyone honestly think that they chose that? (www.lgbtqnation.com/2012/07/am…) People don't chose to be homosexual, or transgender, or queer. They were born that way, in the same way that heterosexual individual were born straight.

Comment: "Sorry - but an normal family is one man / one woman & a child. gay people with kids ARE NOT considered a normal family, they are considered pedophiles."

I don't know what to even say to this. Like...gah. Give me a moment. Ahhh okay. A pedophile is someone who is sexually attracted to children. A homosexual is someone who is sexually attracted to someone of the same gender. Can anyone tell me how the two are considered the same? Smh America.

Comment: "Well, the problem here (and increasingly in many venues lately) is the forcing of gayness in the WRONG places. And this show is a FAMILY show (and a very popular one, which we (up to now, anyway) have LOVED!), and on DISNEY, for crying out loud, which is "for kids". So whose bright idea was to invade GLC w/ the gay agenda?"

Yeah, it's a family show. Your point? And..."gay agenda"? Like what, gaining denied human rights?

Comment: "But please note that man and woman is the NORMAL way according to NATURE."

Homosexuality exists in hundreds of species. What isn't normal is hate. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homosexu…)

Just...gah. The ignorance, intolerance, and overall hate is just astounding and disgusting.

I'm a Christian, and I will tell you that we do not believe in hating gays.  In fact, most of us are taught to treat them with love and compassion as we would anyone else.  The Bible says homosexuality is wrong, and while we do disagree with the gay lifestyle, we don't hate the person, just the act of homosexuality itself.  The extreme "Christians" who publicly hate on gays with an undying passion are not good examples of Christianity.  Christians are sinners, too.

I just saw the episode, and I must say, I am pretty proud in Disney Channel. It was really, really bold of them to portray quite a 'controversial' couple on their network, even if briefly. I found that it was done well without being contrived, distracting, and still retained the same Good Luck Charlie humor.

Disney had interracial and interspecies couples, with and without children, but same sex is too much?

Also I am pretty sure those people fleeing from persecution you talked about were die-hard homosexual-hating change-fearing Christians, at the very least that is what the pilgrims were.

not even mentioning the fact that disney channel itself is completely horrible. From what i've seen, their ideas of writing jokes is having the characters insult each other. And not in a teasing sort of way, in a dead serious kind of way, and that's just horrible. it's teaching little kids that it's funny to make fun of someone and it's not. But good, at least, that they're adding a lesbian couple. I swear, if they are made fun of, or shown in a bad light in any way, I will explode.

YES! Disney channel is in no way 'wholesome' If I had had children, that is one channel they wouldn't have been allowed to watch. You are right about the insults, I caught part of a 'Hannah Montana' episode where the kids were treating old people like dirt! No wonder kids are so disrespectful to seniors...just awful

This makes me cringe so fucking badly...
If the families are that anti-gay, they should shelter their kids from everything in the real world and go live without any common day technology, because that might as well be "unethical too".

Bible thumping scum =.=

Right. And if they really want to get technical on a bible basis, then they're not allowed to marry anyone who isn't a virgin, and they have to be as well or else they face the "ultimate penalty". But I don't see anyone preaching about that.

I don't mind gays at all. Love is love no matter who it is with. I have some really homophobic people in my surroundings, but I don't let that get me down.
But on a different note, I don't like that Disney is going gay. Not because of religion or anything like that, but because I like Disney the way it is now. I don't know why they would change it, other than the fact that they might be wanting to appeal to a different group of people out there. Because I think it might be nice for some kids as gays to know that Disney supports them and they aren't the outsiders of the world even though people make them feel like that sometimes.

So I guess I am sort of in the middle with this (:

Guess I will have to stop allowing Disney Channel. With the way they play re-runs a million times I don't want my kids being desensitized to homosexuality. Eventually we will have to get rid of TV completely. I don't want to watch homosexual trash

That's horrible. Does this mean that if your child told you they were gay you would disown them. Homosexuality isn't a choice, I mean what if the world were gay and being straight was considered wrong.

Good wishing, the world is NOT gay, its the 5% of people that should live all in San Fran with a fence around them!

It's said the last stand of racism and bigotry will be in the minorities themselves. As they are use to pushing but not being pushed. Example: the movie "Die Hard-with a vengeance" was the first movie to cast a black character as an obvious racist, because up to that point nobody had ever considered that the problem had reversed itself in America.  Your statement " ...die-hard homosexual-hating change-fearing Christian!" Is an example of retro bigotry, and religious persecution.

Remember these people were taught from childhood to believe in some kind of god of sorts. It's not their fault they believe, they can't help it any more than you can help but believe in your cause. So try not to stereotype them, not all of them believe gays are outcasts.

Yes they believe it's a sin, but also that they also are sinners, making them the same filth in gods eyes as any gay, no? So a gay person need not abstain from being gay any more than any sin they are helplessly prone to commit. They need only recognize it's a sin out of their grasp to fully atone for, like any of us, we sin out of a pure sinful nature, and our god figure forgives us in some way, depending on the religion and sect.

When you seek change, remember to fight for the middle ground, not for all out victory ending in 'retro oppression'. Because the middle ground is were conflicts are resolved peacefully, and both sides can find an acceptable reconciliation that will allow the hatred to fade..

Yeah dA has a high population of open minded people, though they do get nasty on their side of the argument, which is why I encourage arguing for the middle ground even in the face of harsh hostility. You'd be surprised how many people calm down and accept your point of view. But you can't win em all, that's for sure, but just maintain your middle ground stance politely and you will at least give them reason to calm down. :)

Thank you. I've had this same rant for years.

People should actually be pretty impressed by Disney for taking such a step. One of their major themes in their movies and shows has been acceptance for those who are different. For people to leave those comments, and claim to watch a lot of Disney Channel, they obviously are missing some of the major points to why those shows are on there in the first place.

The worst part of it all is that the people spewing this roiling verbal version of viral diarrhea don't even realize the ignorant hate in their comments and ideas. Even something as beautiful and precious as a couple wanting to get married and adopt one of the THOUSANDS of children orphaned ( many by those "normal, god-fearing, true Americans") is seen as an attack on all they hold dear. Disney has been about peace, love, imagination and acceptance of the entire world, it is evident by the eclectic nature of the nationalities and races portrayed, even Disney world has the international pavilions for goodness' sake!

There is one thing to disagree and dislike, but when your apprehension at something moves into the realm of actively seeking to subjugate it even if it doesn't really affect you is downright evil in my opinion.

All good points, but I would also like to point out that, so what if being gay was choice? It doesn't hurt anyone, so even if people WERE choosing to be gay then what would be wrong with that? If it doesn't hurt anyone then there is nothing morally objectionable about it. Personally the "born gay" argument bugs me a little because it distracts away from the fact that even if it was a choice it would be a perfectly valid and acceptable choice because those choosing it are consenting adults and aren't harming anyone. If people were born pedophiles that wouldn't make molesting children okay. Being homosexual doesn't harm anyone, and that's why it's okay not because people are born that way. Also this argument fails on a subset of homophobes who are gay and in the closet. As far as they are concerned they made a conscious decision to be straight, so they see sexuality as a choice.

Oh my goodness...this is absolutely horrible, and I feel sick knowing that people would even THINK of saying this.
I wish they could know what it's like for people like me, who is growing up in a christian family, with a lot of homophobic family, constantly telling me I'm going to act like them when I grow up. When in reality I'm a closet lesbian who's been suicidal at times because of their views, knowing I'm not going to be loved by my friends and family anymore...I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy. Once they've walked a mile in our shoes, THEN they can go and say this crap. Until then? They can keep their dumb, uneducated opinions to theirselves.  (I'm going on a rant here myself, sorry, but this is one of the biggest things that set me off >~>)
